Melbourne,
31 July 1884.
To the honorable Graham Berry, M.L.A.,
Chief Secretary.
Sir,
I have the honor to solicit, that Dr. Henri van Heurck, Director of the botanic Garden of Antwerpen (Anvers), Belgium, may be supplied with a set of the Decades (nine) of the Eucalyptography in reciprocation of the gift of a splendid illustrated publication on Diatomeae, received from him for my office.
1
Van Heurck (1885). Part 1, the Atlas of 138 plates, was issued in six fascicles between 1880 and 1883. By the time of this letter, part 2, a ‘Table alphabétique’, had been issued in May 1883 (TL2), and might have been received by M; part 3, the text volume plus three more plates, was not issued until May 1885. M’s request was forwarded to the Premier's Office on 1 August (No. 2174, VPRS 1164, vol. 2, Public Record Office, Victoria), and the Under Secretary, E. Thomson, replied on 9 September: 'Returned, by direction, to the Honorable the Chief Secretary. The Government Printer has been instructed to forward the decades of Eucalyptography to the Director of the Antwerp Botanic Gardens, through the Trustees of the Public Library. The Trustees have also been requested to state, in forwarding the books, that they are presented at the instance of Baron von Mueller'. This news was forwarded the next day to M, who returned the file 'with best thanks' on 11 September 1884.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
