Melbourne,
28/7/84
T. R. Wilson Esqr.
Undersecretary.
Sir
In the letter, which three days ago I had the honor to forward to the hon. the Chief Secretary concerning Junior Assistant Henry,
1
See M to G. Berry, 25 July 1884 (in this edition as 84-07-25a).
I have made a mistake by stating, that he had been two years in the service of the Government, trusting to his own statement as correct; but on referring to the books of the office I find, that he was fully three years in Governments employ, so that if the honorable the Chief Secretary would kindly grant him a gratuity at the rate of service, it would be for three not two years.

The file contains a sheet in an unknown hand: 'Henry is not under the Civil Service Act — he has been paid out of the vote for Contingencies viz XXX Wages of Junior Assistants &c"
Date of entry 1st July 1881 —
Age 34 years
Rate of pay 7/6d per diem —
If he be incapacitated by bodily infirmity from the discharge of his duty, he can receive a gratuity, but only by a vote of the House
1/8 —
MS annotation by Wilson, 14 August: "Inf[or]m Govt Botanist that resig[natio]n of Mr Henry will be accepted but that no gratuity can be given'. See T. Wilson to M, 19 August 1884 (in this edition as 84-08-19a).
I have the honor to be
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
