I have the honor, by direction of the Chief Secretary, to request that you will be good enough to furnish me, at as early a date as possible, with the undermentioned information as far as regards your Department for the purpose of its being laid before the Legislative Assembly in compliance with an order on the motion of Mr Mirams.

A clipping is attached with an extract from Votes and proceedings of the Legislative Assembly [Victoria], Session 1884, vol. 1, p. 34, as follows:
7. Public Departments — Persons Employed in and Promoted since 8th March, 1883. —
Mr Mirams moved, pursuant to amended notice; That there be laid before this House a return showing the names of persons now employed in each of the public departments, who were not in the employ of the State on the 8th March, 1883, stating in each case the amount of salary; and the kind of employment; also, the names of persons who were in the public service on 8th March, 1883, who have been promoted since, and the amount of increased remuneration now given; also, those employed who have been provided with increased salaries in the Estimates for 1884-5 other than increments caused by the operation of law.
