Vor einigen Wochen, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, schrieb ich an die Dame in Dunedin, welche Ihnen einen Glaskasten mit neuseeländischen Farn zuzuwenden wünscht, — Ihr sagend, dass ich sehr gern bereit sei, die Weiter-Besorgung von hier zu übernehmen, rieth Ihr aber an, die einzelnen Ex. zu vertopfen und zum guten Wuchs zu bringen, u. die Kiste so zu senden, dass solche bald von hier mit einem deutschen Dampfschiff nach Hamburg gesandt werden könnte. Die Zeit der Fahrten ist ja aus den Journalen zu ersehen auch in N. Seel. Wir habe

hier nur nach längeren Intervallen Dampfschiffe nach Hamburg.
Dann liegt es mir ob, Ihnen meinen wärmsten Dank auszusprechen für das Lob, welches Sie meiner Fossilien-Decade so grossmüthig gestreuet haben. Gerade von Ihnen ist mir eine solche günstige Beurtheilung besonders werthvoll!
Falls Sie Werth auf Exemplare der hiesigen fossilen Früchte legen, will ich Ihnen sehr gern Exemplare senden. Ihre Winke über die weitere Forschung nach der Verwandtschaft einiger dieser Früchte werde ich beachten.
Nun möchte ich auch vorfragen, ob meine Briefe u Packete bei Ihnen frei ankommen. Das Postamt hier hat mir seit Jahren mitgetheilt, dass der hiesige Regierungs Stempel alle Briefe für den Continent Europa's bis England frei machen, dass ich also nur noch Postmarken zum Betrag des Portos von England nach Deutschland u.s.w. hinzuzufügen hätte. Plötzlich sind mir aber in dieser Hinsicht arge Zweifel entstanden; denn ich höre eben vom französ. General Consulat, dass nicht nur der Colonial-Gouvernements Stempel in Frankreich nie anerkannt wird, sondern sogar die Empfänger meiner officiellen Briefe ein doppeltes Porto zu bezahlen hätten! Es ist nur gut, dass Hr Dr Stephan bald auf dem Congress in Lissabon Universal Uniformität des Portos und Regierungs Reciprocitäten begründen wird. Letztere haben wir in Victoria mit den Vereinstaaten längst gehabt, u selbstverständlich hat es sehr dazu beigetragen, viele Briefe u. Packete nach Nordamerika über San Francisco zu senden, u. Alles aus meinem Departement geht frei; selbst nach Arizona, Virginie usw.

oder andere Farnbäume von hier? Solche könnten mit dem Hamburger Dampfschiff leicht geschickt werden, aber sollten dort im Sommer ankommen, was auch für Frl. Mueller's Farnkräuter gilt.

Some weeks ago, highly esteemed Professor, I wrote to the lady in Dunedin

who wished to give you a glass case with New Zealand Ferns, saying to her that I am very gladly prepared to undertake the further handling from here, but advised her to re-pot the individual specimens and bring them to a good growth and to send the case so that it can be sent quickly from here by a German steamer to Hamburg. The time of sailing is certainly to be ascertained from the newspapers also in New Zealand. We have here steamships to Hamburg only after longer intervals.
Then I am obliged to express my warmest thanks to you for the praise that you have so generously strewn on my Fossil Decade.

Such a favourable judgement from you is particularly precious to me!
If you set value on specimens of the local fossil fruit, I shall very gladly send you specimens. I shall consider your advice about further research on the relationship of some of these fruits.
Now I should like also to ask whether my letters and parcels come to you free . The Post Office here informed me some years ago that the local government stamp makes all letters for the Continent of Europe free as far as England, that consequently I only had to add extra stamps to the amount of the postage from England to Germany and so on. But suddenly in this respect I have grave doubts, because I have just heard from the French Consulate General that not only is the Colonial Government’s stamp never acknowledged in France, but what is more the recipients of my official letters have to pay a double postage. The latter we have in Victoria long had with the United States , and of course it has contributed very much to sending many letters and parcels to North America via San Francisco, and everything from my department goes free, even to Arizona, Virginia and so forth.

This combination not in IPNI or APNI (accessed 6 December 2021); in B83.03.04, p. 137, M treated Balantium as a synonym of Dicksonia.
or other tree ferns from here? Such could easily be sent by the Hamburg steamer, but they should arrive there in summer — which also applies to Miss Mueller’s ferns.
