Hierbei erlaube ich mir, verehrter Herr Perthes, Ihnen einen Zeitungs Auschnitt zu senden, der meine Antritts Rede in der Victoria-Abtheilung der geographischen Gesellschaft Australiens enthält. Es mag dabei bemerkt sein, dass ich den Vortrag nicht persönlich halten konnte, da ich seit 8 Monaten brustleidend gewesen, dann ich zu erblicher Phthisis geneigt bin. Sehr geschwächt schrieb ich diese Rede; u habe nicht die nöthige Zeit und geistige Kraft daran verwenden können, wie ich eilig zuletzt − obwohl sehr krank − der Gesellschaft gerecht werden musste.

So habe ich sagen wollen , dass Polynesien, d. h. das westliche, hauptsächlich oder zum grossen Theil (aber nicht ausschliesslich) commerciell zu Australien gehöre, denn unser grosses Deutsches Reich beherrscht ja den Handel in Samoa, Neu Britanien, Neu Irland, während Frankreich ausgedehnte Handels Verbindungen direct mit Neu Caledonien hat.

Mein leidender Zustand, der bei der gegenwärtigen Korperschwäche auch auf den Geist wirkt, muss diese Unvollkommenheiten in meinem Vortrag entschuldigen.

Enclosed I presume to send you, esteemed Mr Perthes, a newspaper clipping that contains my inaugural address to the Victorian Branch of the Geographical Society of Australia. It may be noted that I could not deliver the address personally, because for 8 months I was suffering chest complaints, as I am inclined to hereditary phthisis.

B84.04.03. In M's absence, his address to the inaugural meeting of the Victorian Branch, held on 18 April 1884, was read by the Secretary of the Branch, A. C. Macdonald (Proceedings of the Geographical Society of Australasia, New South Wales and Victorian Branches, vol. 1, 1885, p. 109). The address was published in the Argus on 26 April; it was presumably a copy of this that M sent to Perthes, and his letter is dated on this basis to late April 1884.

I wrote this address very weakened and I was not able to spend the necessary time and mental power on it, as I finally hurriedly had to do justice to the Society, although very ill.

I wanted to say that Polynesia, that is the western especially or the large part (but not solely) belongs to Australia, as our great German Reich indeed controls the trade in Samoa, New Britain, New Ireland, whereas France has extensive trade connections directly with New Caledonia.

A leading theme of M's address was the desirability of Britain's taking control of Papua.

My ailing condition that in the present bodily weakness also acted on my mind must excuse these imperfections in my address.
