Herewith, dear Mr Best, a cheque of £1.6/- of which sum £1 is intended for four tickets of Mr Kershaw's collections

David Kershaw, who had died on 8 September 1883 ( Argus , 19 September 1883, p. 1), and whose 'Cabinet Collection of Australian Beetles' was exhibited at the Conversazione of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria on 30 April 1884 ( Victorian naturalist , vol. 1 (1884), p. 35).

and 6/ as first years payment for the "Naturalist".

i.e. Victorian naturalist, the journal of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria of which Best was Secretary.
