1884 VICTORIAN INTERCOLONIAL EXHIBITION 1884
OF
WINE, FRUIT, GRAIN,
And all other Products of the Soil of Australasia,
WITH MACHINERY, PLANT, TOOLS, &C, EMPLOYED.
To The Baron von Mueller K.C.M.G.
Dear Baron
In commemoration of the First Intercolonial Exhibition, initiated and carried on from purely Patriotic Motives, solely by the Private Subscriptions of yourself and the other Members of the Committee, without Government Aid, (the object being, to establish a School of Viticulture with the surplus Funds, if any), I respectfully request that you will PRESERVE THIS COPY OF THE NAMES OF THE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, who in conjunction with yourself worked so energetically to bring to a successful issue, an Exhibition which in the opinion of your fellow Colonists, has done so much to demonstrate the resources of these Colonies, and remove the prejudices which have hitherto existed in regard to Colonial Products. The Exhibition was opened on March 17th, 1884, by His Excellency the Most Honorable the Marquis of Normanby, which occasion is memorable for his making the Valedictory Address to the Colony. It was closed April 26th. During that time about 100,000 persons visited the Exhibition. Throughout the whole, a perfect feeling of harmony and friendship has existed with the Committee, and the Daily Press have been unanimous in pronouncing it a great success.
With a profound feeling of respect,
I remain, yours truly,
LOUIS L. SMITH.
