The award was presumably in recognition of the items listed among the 'Supplementary exhibits' in Victorian International Exhibition 1884 (1884), pp. 60-61; see notes to M to G. Berry, 17 February 1884. It may, however been awarded in recognition of the part that M played, as one of the Patrons, in the mounting of the exhibition; see L. Smith to M, 1884 (in this edition as 84-00-00a).
