Seit einigen Tagen, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, befinde ich mich in Bergwäldern etwas entfernt von Melbourne, um in der reinen leichten Luft u. in der ländlichen Stille meine Gesundheit wo möglich herzustellen. Seit 2 Monaten hielt mich ein Bronchialcatarrh in meinen Zimmern u. zum Theil auf dem Krankenlager, u. da ich erbliche Anlage zur Phthisis habe, ist eine hartnäckige Entzündung der Bronchien immer bedenklich bei mir. Hierher nun ist mir von meinem Gehülfen mitgetheilt, dass die Kiste mit den von Ihnen gütig zurückgesandten Algen angekommen sei.

Da ich nun noch eine Weile im Gebirge bleiben werde, danke ich von hieraus für Ihre grosse Güte, so viel von den Sendungen zurückgesandt zu haben; u. ich muss fürchten, dass die Vortheile, welche Sie von meinen Zusendungen hatten, nach einer so extensiven Rückgabe, ganz aus allen Verhältniss

zu Ihren Mühen standen! Bei allen künftigen Gelegenheiten, wenn ich das Glück haben mag, Ihre meisterhafte Erfahrung neuen Algensendungen zugewandt zu sehen, bitte ich Sie, was immer von Interesse für Ihre eignen hochwichtigen Sammlungen sein mag, zurück zu behalten. Selbstverständlich freue mich, dass Ihre mühsame Zeitaufopferung eine Menge überzähliger Exemplare mehreren anderen Algologen zugewandt hat, u. ich bin auch glücklich, nun die Melbourner Sammlung auch so sehr vervollständigt zu sehen. For some days, highly esteemed Professor, I am in mountain forests somewhat distant from Melbourne to restore my health where possible in the pure light air and in the rural peace.

Having already been granted permission to go, on 22 November 1883 M notified the Chief Secretary, Graham Berry, that he was leaving for Mount Macedon (M to G. Berry, 22 November 1883 (in this edition as 83-11-22a). He reported his return to Melbourne in M to G. Berry, 7 December 1883.

For two months a bronchial catarrh kept me in my rooms and in part on the sick bed, and because I have a hereditary predisposition to phthisis, a persistent inflammation of the bronchial tubes is always serious in my case. My assistant

has now informed me here that the box with the algae kindly sent back by you has arrived.

Since I now will still remain a while in the mountains, I thank you from here for your great kindness in having returned so much of the consignment;

and I must fear that the advantages that you had from my consignments, after such an extensive return, are quite out of all proportion to your trouble! On all future occasions, if I may have the fortune to see your masterful experience turned to new consignments of algae, I ask you to retain whatever may be of interest for your own highly important collections. Of course I am pleased that your arduous sacrifice of time has procured a considerable number of surplus specimens for several other algologists, and I am also happy to see the Melbourne collection now also so very complete. With gratitude and respect your
