Von einem Bronchial Catarrh leidend, lieber Herr Möller, u kaum etwas besser, ist es mir nicht möglich, längere Briefe für diese Post zu schreiben, u daher beschränke ich mich auf wenige Worte in Anerkennung Ihres letzten Briefes. Es ist mir sehr angenehm zu hören, dass Sie bereit sind, die "select plants" ins Portugiesiche zu übersetzen, und wäre ich auch nicht abgeneigt, noch £5 zu bewilligen für die Revision durch einen guten Sprachkenner, ausser dem Honorar von £20 für Sie selbst. Auf die Hauptsache gehen Sie aber in Ihrem Briefe gar nicht ein, nämlich ob Sie einen Verleger

gefunden haben, der sich bereit erklärt bald u auf eigne Kosten das Werk drucken zu lassen?

Sie werden einsehen, dass es ganz nutzlos für mich wäre, wenn das Werk übersetzt würde, ohne gedruckt werden zu können; auch wäre es gerecht, dass nach einer so grossen Ausgabe meinerseits, die Bedingung an die Abgabe des Manuscripts geknüpft würde, dass eine Anzahl Frei-Exemplare an meinen London Agenten, Mess. Watson & Scull (Lower Thames Street) für mich gesendet würden.

Mein Rath geht nun dahin, dass Sie sich freundlichst an jemand in Rio Janeiro wenden, um im Ministerium vorfragen zu lassen, ob die dortige Regierung für eine Anzahl Exemplare (etwa 100) unterschreiben wolle, um dadurch einen Theil der Druck-Kosten zu sichern, dies würde wahrscheinlich angenommen werden, da das Werk für die Regierungs Bureaus u. wissenschaftlichen Anstalten Brasiliens wichtig sein würde.

Eine Anzahl Subscribenten könnte ein unternehmender Verleger gewiss auch in Portugal u in den portugiesischen Colonien mit Ihrer Hülfe zusammenbringen, u. das Werk würde sich für den Herausgeber gewiss luctrativ erweisen, da er ja das Manuscript gratis bekommt.

Zur Zeit, wenn eine Antwort auf die Frage in Bezug auf einen Verleger einlaufen kann von Ihnen bei mir, wird die neue amerikanische Ausgabe erschienen sein; u. da diese noch etwas umfangsvoller ist als die Sydney-Ausgabe, nach welcher unser Freund Dr Goeze die deutsche Übersetzung veranstaltete, so wird es besser sein, dass ich Ihnen die Detroit-Ausgabe anstatt der von Sydney sende; Sie könnten aber ja beginnen nach Dr Goeze’s Übersetzung, sobald der Druck gesichert ist; schlägt das Letztere aber Fehl, so muss selbstverständlich die ganze Sache zu Grunde fallen , was ich recht bedauern würde. Für Sie wäre es doch eine schöne Aufgabe, die Ihnen dauernd nützten wird, u. Ihnen auch wissenschaftlichen additionellen Credit bringen würde. Bestens grüssend

It is very agreeable to me to hear that you are prepared to translate the Select plants into Portuguese and I would also not be averse to granting another £5 for the revision by a good linguist, in addition to the honorarium of £20 for you yourself. But in your letter you do not go into the main point at all, that is whether you have found a publisher who declares his willingness to have the work printed soon and at his own cost ?

You will see that it it would be quite useless for me if the work was translated without being able to be printed; also it would be just that after such a large payment on my part, the condition was connected with the delivery of the manuscript that a number of free copies would be sent to my London Agents, Messrs Watson & Scull (Lower Thames Street) for me.

Now it is my advice that you most kindly apply to someone in Rio Janeiro to have enquiry made in the ministry whether the government there would subscribe for a number of copies (about 100) in order to secure a part of the printing costs, this would probably be accepted because the work would be important for the government bureaus and scientific institutions of Brasil.

An enterprising publisher could collect a number of subscribers certainly even in Portugal and in the Portuguese colonies with your help and the work would certainly prove lucrative for the publisher because he gets the manuscript free of cost .

By the time an answer from you to the question in reference to a publisher can arrive at my place, the new American edition

will have appeared; and because this is even somewhat more extensive that the Sydney edition,

B81.01.04.

from which our friend Dr Goeze prepared the German translation,

it will be better that I send you the Detroit edition instead of the Sydney one; but you can certainly begin according to Dr Goeze's edition as soon as the printing is secured; however, if the latter comes to nothing, the whole matter must of course fall to the ground , which I would regret very much. For you it surely would be a splendid task, that would be permanently useful to you and would also bring you additional scientific credit.

No Portuguese edition of the work appeared until 1905.
