In Ihren Briefen, edler Freund, spricht sich stets eine solche Freundlichkeit aus, dass es wahrhaft wohlthuend für mich ist. Leider kann ich Ihnen diesmal nur fast Trauriges melden. Ein schwerer Bronchialcatarrh hat mich befallen, u. da bereits etwas Emphysema eingetreten ist, mag es zweifelhaft sein, ob ich genesen kann. Freilich treten wir hier gerade in den Sommer; aber da beide meine Eltern zeitig an der Bronchial Phthisis starben, bleibt eine Erkrankung wie meine jetzige immer sehr bedenklich. Ich werde die beiden Serien meiner Werke bei Ihnen soweit vervollständigen, als ich es vermag. Mehrere der ältesten Bände sind aber bereits ganz vergriffen. Einiges Literarisches wird schon mit dieser Monatspost an den Verein und auch an Sie abgehen.

Mit dem Erwerb zoologischer Gegenstände ist es letzhin recht kläglich ergangen. Das vorausbezahlte Geld, welches ich vertrauensvoll mehreren Sammlern gab, ist verloren; u. es hat sich sonst keine Gelegenheit geboten etwas zu erlangen, was Sie nicht schon haben. Ich halte aber doch mein Auge offen für irgend etwas, das Ihnen annehmbar sein möchte.

Für den botanisch-technischen Theil Ihres Museums sind Holzsachen bereits in Arbeit, u. können solche bald abgehen, darunter Holz-Bücher, die wie in einer Bibliothek aufgestellt werden können. Das Muster ist original von mir.

Sie sprachen von Ihren Arbeiten für den bot. Theil Ihres Museums als den "Schwanen-Gesang"; das kann nicht sein bei Ihrer robusten Constitution, von welcher ich mir ein Bild noch jetzt lebhaft von Kiel aus machen kann. Ihnen Alles Gute wünschend

In your letters, noble Friend, such friendliness is constantly expressed that it is truly beneficial for me. Unfortunately this time I can only report something almost sad. A severe bronchial catarrh has overcome me and since already some emphysema has come in, it may be doubtful whether I can recuperate. Of course we are just entering into summer here, but since both my parents died early of bronchial phthisis, a disease like my current one always remains very serious. I will complete both series of my works at your place as far as I am able. Several of the oldest volumes are, however, already completely out of print. Several literary items will go off with this month's post to the Verein and also to you.

The acquisition of zoological objects has fared very pitifully of late. The advance payment of money, that I gave trustingly to several collectors, is lost; and otherwise no opportunity has offered to obtain anything that you don't already have. However, I do keep my eyes open for anything that may be acceptable to you.

Work has already started on wooden items for the botanical-technical part of your museum and they can soon go off, among them wood books that can be stood up just as in a library. The model is an original of mine.

You speak of your work for the botanical section of your museum as the "Swan Song"; that cannot be with your robust constitution, of which I can still now make myself a picture vividly from Kiel.
