[About half an acre is set apart for the culture of sugar cane and to this Mr. Rosan gives special attention. Having been in communication with Baron Von Mueller, that gentleman forwarded a small packet of seed which was planted on the 22nd November last.

Rosen's communication is dated to November 1883 as the latest it could have been written for M to respond and send seeds.
… During the last three months it has been cut-down for fodder twice, as it was growing so rank and tall, … This plant is thus described in Baron Von Mueller's work on "Select Plants" - "Andropogon Saccharatus. -Tropical Asia, the Broom Corn. A tall annual species, splendid as fodder-grass. From the saccharine juice sugar is obtainable. ...".
