The post of this day, dear Mr Dyer, brought me your letter of the 26. July,
in which you give the sad tidings of Mr Bentham’s physical extreme prostration. I
had no idea, that he was so far gone, altho’ I felt afraid, that he was overtaxing
his nervous system with that severe and unbroken work, which he carried on for the
past years, when he should have had more mental rest.
The freshness of his mind at so venerable an age as his is marvellous. When you next
visit the venerable savant, please express to him my full sympathy and add a hope
of mine that he may be reinvigorated again and be spared yet for a long time to come.
