To the honorable Malcolm Fraser, C.M.G.,
Colonial Secretary of Western Australia.
I feel much indebted to you, dear Mr Fraser, for sending the 10 excellent samples
of W.A. Woods, which I will have done up in book form to supplement an imitation-library
of wood-books sent to the Calcutta Exhibition.

I am also beholden to you for the 6 additional copies of the W.A. Forest report,
which I shall utilize in the interest of your colony. As there will be for many years
to come often local calls for this document, I shall under no circumstances tax in
this respect your kindness any more

The Report on the woodsamples I will also send to Calcutta. I presume, you sent the
Forest-Report directly and officially yourself.

Western Australia was not officially represented at the Calcutta Exhibition, although
a private exhibit from an Albany brewer was shown. The list of M's exhibits in the
relevant class does not specify which species are included in 'Australian woods, specifically
named:—(Eighty kinds in book form; …' (International Exhibition, Calcutta, 1883-4
(1885), vol. 1, p. [xviv]; part II, pp. 189, 172 respectively).
