de France t. XXIX, Revue, C p. 137 (1882), de votre Literary Reference to the Caoutchouc s, j'ai transcrit le texte de Millin, qui prouve que le genre a été publié anterieurement à 1797.

Aujourd'hui je me trouve en possession de nouveaux renseignements, grace à un prospectus publié le 21 Nov. 1796 par l'éditeur de l'Encyclopédie, prospectus qu'un heureux hazard à fait entrer dans ma bilbiotheque. Je vous en adresse ci-joint un extrait.

I have transcribed Millin's text, which proves that the genus was published prior to 1797.

Today I am in possession of new information, thanks to a prospectus published on 21 November 1796 by the editor of the Encyclopedia, a prospectus that a happy chance has brought into my library. I attach an extract from it.

1st Frimaire, 5th year of the French Republic

(Monday 21 November 1796, old style)

This instalment comprises

1. the seventieth [set] of the plates of natural history, forming the seventh century of those of botany, by citizen Lamarck of the Institut National, professor and administrator of the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle.

The volume of plates that is part of this instalment is the seventh century of those of botany, and presents the continuation of the work entitled Illustrations des genres .

Lamarck (1791-1823) was subtitled 'Illustrations des genres' on the introductory page of vol. 1 and was often referred to by that title (TL2: item 4137). As Gleason points out, this constitutes definitive evidence that plates 601-700 of the Illustrations des genres actually appeared in 1796, whereas the accepted date of publication had previously been taken to be 1797.

These plates are engraved with the greatest care, and most of the figures are original.

They offer, from plates 601 to 700 inclusive, 164 genera, among which are a quantity of new ones … The genera displayed in this instalment amount to the whole of the Diadelpheae, the Polyadelpheae, and the greatest part of the Syngeneseae … In the sixty-first instalment we shall publish the first part of the IVth volume of the Dictionnaire de botanique, by citizen Lamarck.

L'Encyclopédie méthodique ou par ordre de matières par une société de gens de lettres, de savants et d'artistes … , the botanical parts of which were by Lamarck, was issued in instalments. Vol. 4, part 1 of Lamarck (1783-1817) was issued on 9 February 1797 and included entries from 'Mauvisque' to 'Paniculée'; the authorship on the title page was attributed to 'le Citoyen Lamarck, de l'Institut national de France'.
