Es ist mir ganz unbegreiflich, lieber Herr Holtze, dass Sie von mir seit einem Jahre keine Nachrichten hatten. Ich habe während der letzten 12 Monate mehrmals an Sie geschrieben, und jedesmal sogleich die Namen von Pflanzen gesandt, wenn solche ankamen. Dies geschieht gewöhnlich ohne Aufenthalt wenigstens soweit, als die blosse Ansicht (ohne microscopische Zergliederung) es möglich macht; wenn also Sie keine Namenslisten erhalten haben, so sind entweder Ihre Pflanzen gar nicht angekommen, oder meine Briefe darüber an Sie verloren gegangen, wie ich telegraphisch aussprach. Es bliebe also dann nur eins übrig, nämlich die unbenannten Pflanzen noch einmal zu senden, wenn auch nur als Darlehe , denn ich schalte stets die neuen Sendungen bald nach Empfang in die Hauptsammlung ein, u damit geht selbstverständlich die Übersicht über die Nummern gänzlich verloren. Es wäre auch gut, wenn Sie Ihre Briefe registrirten , u immer über Ihre Sendungen mit den Dampfschiffen eine "bill of loading" ausnehmen. Das Einfachste wäre freilich, mit jeder Post ein kleines Packet Pflanzen zu senden; auf diese Weise würde Alles sicher nach u nach mit der Mail gehen. Manche Ihrer Pflanzen sind leider ohne Frucht , u doch sagt schon die Bibel: "An den Früchten sollt Ihr sie erkennen"! So war es mir recht bedauerlich dass ich noch immer keine Frucht von 97 u 180 habe, nämlich Tinospora Hullsii. Es mag aber vielleicht gar keine Tinospora sein, was erst aus der Frucht zu beweisen ist.

It is completely incomprehensible to me, dear Mr Holtze, that you have had no news from me for a year. I have written to you several times during the past 12 months, and each time sent the names of plants immediately when such arrived. This usually takes place without delay at least in as far as this is possible by a simple examination (without microscopic dissecting). So if you have not received any lists with names, either your plants have not arrived at all, or my letters to you about them have been lost, as I mentioned by telegraph.

So that leaves only one option, and that is to send the unnamed plants again, even if only on loan , because I always sort the new arrivals into the main collections shortly after receiving them and with that any record of the numbers is, of course, completely lost. It would be a good idea if you registered your letters and always took out a 'bill of loading' for your dispatches by steamship. The simplest method would of course be to send a small parcel of plants with every mail ; in this way everything would arrive safely by and by through the post. Unfortunately many of your plants are without fruit , yet already the Bible tells us: 'By their fruits thou shalt know them'! Thus I greatly regretted that I still have no fruit of No. 97
