Erlauben Sie mir, geehrter Herr Möller, Ihnen einen Vorschlag zu machen, wozu ich von unserem Freunde Herrn Dr Goeze ermuthigt bin. Es scheint mir sehr wünschenswerth, dass von meinem Werke "select plants for industrial culture and naturalisation" eine portugiesische Ausgabe erscheine. Herr Dr Goeze übersetzte das Buch voriges Jahr ins Deutsche, und wird Ihnen ein Exemplar seiner Übersetzung senden.

Ich selbst schicke mit dieser Post die letzte englische Ausgabe an Sie ab. Falls Sie geneigt sein sollten, selbst die Übersetzung zu übernehmen, zumal da Sie sich besonders für Nutzplanzen interessiren, so wäre ich bereit Ihnen ein Honorar von £20. ( zwanzig Pfund Sterling ) für das Übersetzen zu zahlen, so dass ein Verleger in Portugal das Manuscript kosten frei bekäme. Unter solchen Umständen sollte doch wohl der Druck in Ihrem Lande möglich sein, zumal da sich doch eine Menge Exemplare der portugiesischen Ausgabe auch in Brasilien verkaufen liessen. Wahrscheinlich würde Ihr Pflanzenliebender König geruhen die Dedication des Werkes anzunehmen, was Ihnen doch auch angenehm sein würde. Dass dies das einzige Werk über Nutzpflanzen ist, welches bis zur Neuzeit vollendet wurde, und nur wirklich werthvolle Pflanzen einschliesst, mag Ihnen bekannt sein. Ich selbst verlange vom Verleger nichts als einige Freiexemplare. Meine Subsidie von £20 würde ich senden, sobald ich von Ihnen höre, dass Sie sich dieser literarischen Arbeit unterziehen wollen, und einen sicheren Verleger gefunden haben.

Viconde Allen hatte es übernommen, für die Übersetzung zu wirken, aber ich habe seit vielen Monaten nichts mehr von ihm gehört. Jedenfalls würde dieser Edelmann wohl helfen, Subscribenten für den Verleger zu bekommen.

Die Weltausstellung hier 1880-1881, dann längeres Kränkeln u überhäufte AmtsArbeiten haben mich verhindert, viel für Coimbra in den letzten Jahren zu thun.

Wenn Sie mir sagen wollen, welche meiner Werke in Ihrer Garten oder Universitäts Bibliothek sind, will ich das Fehlende senden, soweit es erlangbar ist. Herrn Professor Henriques bitte ich bestens in meinem Namen zu begrüssen. Die Sydney Ausgabe der Select plants ist bedeutend erweitert, und ich könnte noch Einiges mehr zu portugiesischen Ausgabe beitragen.

Obgleich das Werk nur aussertropische Pflanzen umfasst, wird es doch selbst für Südbrasilien u für die höhere Berggegenden Brasiliens anwendbar sein, gerade wie es sich in Indien verhalt, wo die Central Regierung eine Ausgabe erscheinen liess in Calcutta .

If you should be inclined to undertake the translation yourself, especially since you are particularly interested in useful plants, I would be prepared to pay you an honorarium of £20 ( twenty pounds Sterling ) for the translation, so that a publisher in Portugal would receive the manuscript free of cost . Under such circumstances the printing in your country should surely be possible, especially since a large number of copies of the Portuguese edition would also surely sell in Brazil. would deign to accept the dedication of the work, which would certainly also be agreeable to you. It may be known to you that this is the sole work on useful plants that has been completed in modern times and includes only really valuable plants. I desire nothing myself from the publisher other than some free copies. I would send my subsidy of £20 as soon as I hear from you that you will undertake this literary work and have found an assured publisher .

A Portuguese translation, by Júlio Henriques, was eventually published, but not until 1905; see B05.13.01.

Viscount Allen has undertaken to work for the translation,

but I have heard nothing more from him for many months. In any case this nobleman would probably help to get subscribers for the publisher.

then a long illness and overwhelming official work have prevented me doing much for Coimbra of late years.

If you will tell me which of my works are in your garden or university library, I will send what is lacking as far as it is procurable. Please give best greetings to Professor Henriques in my name. The Sydney edition of the Select plants is significantly enlarged and I could contribute something more to the Portuguese edition.

Although the work embraces only extratropical plants, it will certainly be applicable even for south Brazil and for the higher mountain regions of Brazil, just like the situation in India, where the Central Government had an edition published in Calcutta .
