Ich bin Ihnen dankbar verpflichtet, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, für die gütige Weise,
in welcher Sie sich erbieten, sich des Sohnes meines Freundes Dr Rudall anzunehmen,
sollte ihm vorkommendenfalls Ihre Hülfe nöthig sein. Dr Rudall, dem ich Ihren Brief
vorlas, lässt Ihnen besonders danken, und er so wie seine Gemahlin fühlen sich nun
das Knaben wegen um so mehr beruhigt.

Arten von hier in Alcohol zu erlangen, soll bald erfüllt werden. Wir haben nun eine
Eisenbahn nach demjenigen Theil der Küste, an welchem diese Meeres-Gewächse am zahlreichsten
vorkommen, so dass das Erlangen nicht so schwierig wie früher ist. Ich werde desswegen
selbst eine Reise machen, kann es aber wohl erst im nächsten Monat thun, da meine
Zeit während der nächsten Wochen ganz besetzt ist. Bei dieser Gelegenheit könnte ich
ja auch Exemplare anderer Gattungen mit hinzufügen, da J. Agardh doch eigentlich nur
die Entwicklungsgeschichte der Florideen ausgedehnt bearbeitet hat, soweit mir seine
Werke als aus seiner Hand vorliegen
Herrn Dr Hugo Schulz Abhandlung über das Öl der Eucalypten, hat mich sehr interessirt,
namentlich von medicinischer Seite, und werde ich einen Theil seiner data in der (nun
im Druck befindlichen) neunten Decade in englischer Übertragung wieder geben. Die
Platten auch für die 10te Decade sind fertig. Eigentlich hat es mich befremdet, dass
in dieser ausgedehnten Special Abhandlung die Eucalyptographie gar nicht erwähnt ist,
da doch die erste Decade bereits Anfangs 1879 erschien. Freilich ist Dr Schulz’s Werk
auch schon 1881 gedruckt. Vielleicht ist kein vollständiges Exemplar in Bonn, denn
beim Vertheilen nach allen Theilen der Erde hin, soweit meine Mittel reichen, wird
doch manchmal die eine oder andere Anstalt übersehen, auch mag gelegentlich ein Theil
des Versandten auf dem weiten Wege verloren gehen.
Wäre es gut, das Werk an irgend einen Verein in Bonn zu senden, dem die hervorragenden
Naturforscher angehören, denen dann allseits das Werk zugänglich sein würde.
Wir haben hier nun eine locale Agentur, welche Versendungen nach dem Continent Europas
sicher vermittelt, auf diese Weise kann ich es einrichten, dass die Algen Ihnen dort
frei zu kommen werden.

In die Eucalyptographie sind auch einige chemische und hygienische Notizen eingestreuet.
Wie schade, dass Dr Schulz nicht mit Sicherheit festgestellt hat, ob er wirklich mit
dem Öl der Euc globulus experimentirte, was vielleicht noch jetzt zu ermitteln wäre.

I am obliged to you, highly esteemed Professor, for the kindly manner in which you
offer to accept the son of my friend Dr Rudall,
if your assistance should happen to be necessary for him. Dr Rudall, to whom I read
your letter,
thanks you especially, and he as well as his wife now feels so much the more reassured
about the boy.
Your wish to get
species from here in alcohol shall be carried out soon. We now have a railway to
that part of the coast on which these marine plants occur most abundantly, so that
the acquisition is not as difficult as previously. I will therefore myself make a
journey but can probably only do it next month, since my time during the next weeks
is quite occupied. On this occasion I could certainly also add specimens of other
genera, since J. Agardh has actually only treated the history of development of the
extensively, in so far as his works are available to me as from his hand.
Dr Hugo Schulz's paper on the oil of the eucalypts
has interested me very much, especially from the medical side, and I will repeat
a part of his data in English translation in the ninth Decade (now in the press).
The plates for the 10th Decade
are also completed. Actually I am displeased that in this extensive special paper
the Eucalyptography is not mentioned at all, since indeed the first Decade had already
appeared at the beginning of 1879.
Admittedly Dr Schulz's work was also printed as early as 1881. Perhaps there is no
complete copy in Bonn, since in the distribution to all parts of the world, as far
as my funds reach, one or other institution will sometimes be overlooked, occasionally
a part of the shipment may also be lost on the way.
It would be good to send the work to some society in Bonn to which the outstanding
natural scientists belong, to whom the work would then be available to all.
We now have a local agency here thst safely arranges shipments to the continent of
Europe; in this way I can arrange that the algae will reach you there free of charge.
