The file includes a note written by Luehmann and signed by M that probably constitutes
the starting point of the exchange: 'Submitted for the favorable consideration of
the Honorable the Chief Secretary. Melbourne, 22/5/83'. This is followed by a file
note signed by Wilson, marked 'C.S.O' and dated '/6/83': 'Will the Government Botanist
be good enough to inform me whether the accompanying account represents the
total
cost of printing the "Index of Plants indigenous to Australia" & if not what the total
is.'

MS annotation in a clerk's hand: 'Will the Government Botanist be good enough to inform
me whether the sum of £247.12s.6d represents the whole expenditure for printing, binding
&c, including the 2nd part. C.S.O. /6/83'. Before signing this, Wilson added 'or if
not what the total cost is likely to be?'.
To this M replied with a minute on 14 June 1883: 'The sum of £247.12/6d represents the total expenditure of part I
of the Census, as issued already. The second part will not be quite so large, nor
will it appear during the next finance-year, and should it never be printed, the first
one will remain complete in itself'. Part 2 was never printed although an extensive
manuscript remains in the Library at MEL (RB MSS 772).

The present account of £35.6/6d
closes
the expenditure of part I. of the "Census"; the second part cannot appear before 1884.
