Certificate is accompanied by another signed by Louis L. Smith, president of the Victorian Commission for the Amsterdam Exhibition: 'I hereby certify that the Jurors of the Amsterdam International Exhibition, 1883, have awarded a Diploma of Honour to Baron F von Mueller K.C.M.G. for an exhibit of botanical specimens &c &c.' This phrasing suggests that the diploma was awarded for an album of 'Select Australian flowers, new for horticulture' which at M's suggestion was later presented to the King of the Netherlands, Willem III, by George Levey, Commissioner for Victoria at the Amsterdam Exhibition. (Levey's covering letter dated 6 September 1883 and a file copy of a letter of acknowledgment dated 4 October 1883 are in the Koninklijk Huisarchief, The Hague, as is the album itself.) The Victorian exhibit also included a large Todea and a set of 'wood-books' supplied by M; see M to Messrs Watson & Scull, 28 February 1883, and M to W. Carruthers, 27 August 1883, respectively.
