Obgleich es eine späte Nachtstunde ist, die mir noch bleibt, lieber Herr Koopmann, um die letzten Briefe für das abgehende Postdampfschiff zu schreiben, so will ich doch Ihnen auch einige Zeilen widmen, u zunächst für das Photogram danken, das Sie mir zu senden die Güte hatten, und das mir einen nahen Verwandten und tüchtigen Fachgenossen bildlich vorführt.

Ich habe mich endlich überreden lassen, für ein lithographisches Bild eine größere Photographie zu liefern; sowie die Lithogrammata fertig sind,werde ich einige an die Ihrigen und besonders an Sie als ein kleines Andenken senden.

Es war mir sehr lieb zu hören, dass Sie dem prächtigen Dr Masters Mittheilungen für die Gardeners Chronicle lieferten, wodurch Sie ihm ja auch direkt Ihre Dankbarkeit bezeigt haben.

Es thut mir leid, dass Sie nicht noch eine Weile in England bleiben konnten, da doch dort solche enorme Geldmittel walten, was der höheren Horticultur immer zu statten kommen wird. Die gesammelten Erfahrungen werden aber doch Ihnen in späterem hoffentlich unabhängigen Geschäftsleben von Nutzen sein. Sie können sich zu irgend einer Zeit in Zukunft auf mich beziehen, wo immer meine Empfehlung Ihnen nützen mag.

Grüssen Sie Ihre gute Mutter bestens von mir, auch die andern Verwandten, besonders noch die Familie Baas in Wandsbeck. Ich würde gern dann u. wann Geschenke machen; aber bei den fast erdrückenden Amts-Obliegenheiten kann ich fast nie an Privat-Sachen denken, u. so ist es auch dies bei der Absicht geblieben.

Christian Koopmann was the second son of M's cousin Marie, née Mertens, and her husband Ferdinand Christian Johannes Koopmann.

I have finally let myself be persuaded to supply a larger photograph for a lithographic picture; as soon as the lithographs are ready, I shall send some to your relatives and especially to you as a small souvenir.

It was a great pleasure to learn that you sent information for the Gardener's Chronicle to the brilliant Dr Masters, by which you showed him directly your gratitude.

It is not known to what communication M refers. No report by Christian Koopmann was published in the Gardeners' chronicle. There is, however, an article by his cousin Carl (Karl) Koopmann, who was also a professional gardener, arising from his botanical explorations in Central Asia, and other references to his work there (Gardeners' chronicle, 21 May 1881, pp. 655 and 667, and 31 March 1883, p. 408).

I am sorry that you could not stay on for a while in England, as there are such enormous financial means available that will always be favourable for the higher horticulture. The collected experiences will however be of use to you in a later hopefully independent business life. You may at any time in the future refer to me, whenever my recommendation may be of use to you.

Give my best regards to your good mother, also to the other relatives, especially the Baas family in Wandsbeck.
