1882: 'From Baron von Mueller, Melbourne, conveying thanks for his election as an
Honorary Member of the Society' (RSA/A/5, minute book, Royal Society of Tasmania Archives).
18/9/82
It is to me a gratifying surprise, dear Mr Barnard, that the Royal Society of Tasmania
has raised me to the distinguished position of one of its honorary members.
Through many years I have experienced much consideration of the Society, and now,
after the lapse of more than a quarter of a Century, it is pleasing to me, that the
priviledge of communicating with the Royal Society through all that time may be enjoyed
in future also by me in still nearer relation. Encouragements such as shown by the
Society in this instance, brighten the paths of research and accelerate the steps
through the fields of science. May providence still spare me some life and strenght,
to show myself worthy of the consideration, evinced towards me by many scientific
unions, and now also in its highest terms by the Royal Society of Tasmania.

Very regardfully

Ferd. von Mueller.
