The file contains a copy of Howitt's 'obligation': 'I do hereby oblige myself in conformity with the Bye-laws of the Linnean-Society of London to pay to the Treasurer of the said Society, for the time being, the Annual Contribution of three Pounds, so long as I shall continue a Fellow of the said Society.' The form is signed by Howitt and is embossed with a six pence duty stamp, dated 31 August 1882.
Howitt withdrew from the Fellowship during the 1894-95 session (Proceedings of the Linnean Society, session 1894-95, p. 11).
