Letter not found. The text given here is from a report of the special general meeting of the Linnean Society of New South Wales on 27 September 1882 (Sydney morning herald, 28 September 1882, p. 8).
[The Hon. W. Macleay read a letter from Baron Ferd Von Mueller, of Victoria, K.C.M.G., expressing his sympathy with the society in the loss sustained in the late disastrous fire.

A fire on 22 September 1882 completely destroyed the 'Garden Palace', the 'temporary' building erected for the Sydney International Exhibition of 1879-80 that was subsequently used to house a variety of government offices and other facilities, including the office and museum of the Linnean Society of New South Wales (Sydney morning herald, 23 September 1882, p. 8).
