For reply, see M to A. Berry, 23 August 1882.
Sir,
I have the honor to inform you that one Candidate
has entered for examination this Term in Botany. — This being the first Candidate
for the Certificate of The School in this subject I am at a loss to know what you
will require for the conduct of the examination. — If the examination be wholly a
written one — by Question-paper — then I will ask you to be so good as to forward
to me as early as possible a copy of the Questions in order that I may have time to
get them printed:— if the examination be oral, — or partly written, and partly oral,
— then I would ask you kindly to advise me with reference to what may be necessary
for me to provide for the occasion. — It occurred to me that as you are coming up
to Ballaarat
to deliver a lecture at The School on the 13th September proximo — if a part of the
examination requires to be conducted orally you might examine the Candidate on the
14th, prior to your returning to Melbourne

18 October 1882, after M's report on his performance dated 26 September 1882 was read
to the Council (School of Mines Ballarat, minute book, School of Mines and Industries
