If not prevented by unforeseen circumstances, dear Mr Shillinglaw, I will be happy
to attend at the Bateman-ceremony;
but you know yourself, that in a public Department we are never quite masters of
our time.

The ceremony was the unveiling of a memorial to John Batman, held on Saturday 3 June
1882. The bound volume of materials relating to the memorial includes many other replies
to the invitation to attend that are dated 31 May or 1, 2 or 3 June.
