M has left a space for Forbes's given name. The correspondent was almost certainly Archibald Forbes, 'the famous war correspondent', who was on a lecture tour of Australia and who was given a civic dinner by the Mayor of Melbourne on 3 June 1882 at which M was one of the guests (Argus, 5 June 1882, p. 4).
Forbes, a genial & enlightened cosmopolitan, this modest volume is offered as a small contribution to Melbourne souvenirs by the writer
