Sie werden erinnern, hochgeehrter Herr Doctor, dass ich während meiner Reisen im Jahre 1867 ganz besonders die Fortsetzung der Durchforschung Nordwest-Australiens anregte, nachdem ich selbst an der Entdeckung der reichen Landstriche dort im Jahre 1856 Antheil genommen hatte, in der Expedition von Mr. Aug Gregory. Bald darauf ward der jüngere Mr. Alexander Forrest, dann von der Westaustr. Regierung ausgerüstet, um die herrlichen Basalttriften am öberen Victoria Flusse und an Sturt's Creek mit dem King's Sound in Communication zu bringen, was ich damals vorgeschlagen hatte. Die weitere Folge dieser Unternehmung ist gewesen, dass, wie ich voraussah, die Weideländereien massenhaft von den Capitalisten aufgenommen wurden; und es stellt sich nun die Nothwendigkeit heraus von dem extensiven Areal neue Verbindungslinien zu binden nach all den näher gelegenen Häfen. So ist nun denn die Summe von £2000 von der Westaustralischen Regierung bewilligt, um weitere geographische Vermessungen anzustellen, und mit dieser wichtigen Arbeit ist der geübte Mr John Forrest jetzt beauftragt, während die Admiralität diese Forschung durch einen Marine Offizier für weitere Erkundung der Küstenlinien unterstützt. Mr Forrest verlässt noch in diesem Monat den Schwan-Fluss, und befehligt 3 Vermessungs Parthien, deren eine am Cambridge Golf, eine am King's Sound und eine am Gascoyne Flusse (Shark-Bay) operiren wird. So wird gewiss ein letztes grosses Hauptstück der Landkarte Australiens bald fertig werden.

Mr Forrests eigne Speciall Vermessungen werden vom Cambridge Golf landeinwärts sein. Ich bin mit ihm in beständigem brieflichen Verkehr, und er wird bei dieser Gelegenheit auch wieder neue Materialien für die Vollendung der Flora Australiens liefern. Ehrerbietig der

I quite particularly suggested the continuation of the thorough investigation of north-west Australia, after I myself had shared in the discovery of the rich stretch of land there in the year 1856 in the expedition of Mr Aug. Gregory.

North Australian Exploring Expedition, 1855-6.

Shortly afterwards the younger Mr. Alexander Forrest was then equipped by the Western Australian Government to bring the magnificent basaltic pastures on the upper Victoria River and on Sturt's Creek in communication with King's Sound, which I had suggested at the time. The further consequence of this undertaking has been that, as I foresaw, grazing properties were taken up on a massive scale by capitalists; and now it has turned out necessary to tie new lines of communication from the extensive area to all the nearer located harbours. Thus the sum of £2000 is now granted by the Western Australian Government to make further geographic surveys and the proficient Mr John Forrest is now engaged on this important work, whilst the Admiralty supports this exploration through a marine officer for further reconnaissance of the coast line. Mr Forrest left the Swan River some time this month and is in command of three survey parties, of which one will operate at Cambridge Gulf, one at King's Sound and one on the Gascoyne River (Shark Bay).

So undoubtedly a last great main piece of the map of Australia will soon become completed.

Mr Forrest's own special surveys will be from Cambridge Gulf inland. I am in constant correspondence with him and he will on this occasion also supply further new material for the completion of the flora of Australia.
