Sir,
By direction of the Vice-President I am to inform you that the Council of this Institution are desirous of establishing a series of popular science lectures to be delivered at, and in connection with, The School during the coming winter months

At a special Council meeting on 19 April 1882, M was included in a list of speakers to be invited to lecture at the School (School of Mines Ballaarat, minute book, School of Mines and Industries Ballarat Limited).
2. And respectfully to convey to you the cordial invitation of the Council to assist them in carrying out the object in view by the delivery of one or more of the series
3. I am to ask you to be so good, as to inform me if you can oblige by accepting the invitation, and if so the probable date of delivery. — All expenses will of course be defrayed by The School
