2 [books] plant index of the local botanical gardens, by which we again receive a
welcome sign of life from you we thank you kindly and request support of your further
kindly goodwill for our academy.

It is possible that this letter was sent to the wrong person. No known work by M fits
the description of the gift being acknowledged, while William Guilfoyle's catalogue
of the plants growing in the Melbourne Botanic Garden — which, given M's continuing
hostility towards Guilfoyle and his adminstration of the Garden, he is most unlikely
to have sent anyway — was not published until 1883. Moreover, the comment about 'a
welcome sign of life' seems inappropriate in relation to M, who had maintained regular
contact with the Academy.
