This day, dear Mr Barnard, I received a letter from Mr Spong, in which he directs
my attention to a map by Mr Scott,
issued very many years ago as I had
heard before
, on the then survey through
King's
Island; in this document is mentioned the occurrence of a lot of plants, characteristic
of the fern-tree gullies in the Southern portion of the island. If you could kindly
procure a
tracing
of this map and send me a proof-slip of my article on the King's Island vegetation,
I could make the necessary additions.

A digitized copy of the map in the Royal Society of Tasmania's collection is at
https://eprints.utas.edu.au/17583/
The map is labelled 'Mr Scotts Survey', and the catalogue entry dates it to 1850.
Scott has not been unambiguously identified but he was probably the surveyor and later
member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly James Scott (1810-1884).

I have offered to Mr Henry Graves, to whom I was referred as living in the S. part
of King's Island by Mr Spong, that I would pay to him also £2 pr 100 spec of plants,
& thus I may get a more complete insight into the Flora of the island. Can you for
similar purposes give me the adress of any one on Flinders's Island & also the islets
near it? When will the next part of the R.S.'s papers
appear?

M's letter was read at the monthly meeting of the Royal Society's Council on 4 April
1882 (RSA/A/5), minute book). On 11 April, Barnard minuted: 'Will Mr Hull kindly enable
me to reply to these inquiries from Baron Von Mueller in the passages marked with
pencil? J. Barnard, Hon. Secy.11.4.82'. George Lovett on behalf of H. J. Hull replied
on 20 April: 'Tracing of Kings Island herewith forwarded as requested — I cannot give
the name of any person residing on Flinders Island; — portions of the Island are occupied for pastoral purposes, — there is a resident Schoolmaster
residing on Cape Barren Island who could possibly furnish information respecting occupants
of Flinders — Geo. J. Lovett, pro H. J. Hull absent, 20/4/82'.
