Bailey succeeded Walter Hill as Queensland's Government Botanist in 1881 and became responsible for the Brisbane Botanic Garden. The specimen of ,MEL 2044874, with Bailey's collection number '45', is dated 1882, as are specimens '42', MEL 1548355, Themeda avenacea (of which is a synonym), and '44', MEL 2044875, .

can you help me to the names of any of the specimens in packet numbered 40-51 inclusive? I have to label the plants in our bot. Gar. and there is no names to many of the large trees, and no account of where they came from and there are very few useful books in the library and the Gov have refused to supply me this year with more — Hill had £50 - a year for the library but as he did not spend it they say I have no need of it — in fact were it not for my own books I could do but little but I know if it is in your power to help me you will so I send and hope you will forgive […]
