The MS is on the back of a printed Kew report form, dated 28 September 1881. The report was perhaps enclosed with J. Hooker to M, 25 September 1881. The report, on a Wardian case of plants said to have arrived at Kew on 27 September 1881, stated:
Several roots of grass-like plant - possibly may grow.
Dead plants
Various species of Epacrideae ?Styphelia
All quite dead and rotten. It is quite impossible for plants of this character to exist many days in a Wardian Case - Seeds therefore should be sent.
The entry in the Kew Inwards Book, 1878-1883, has similar comments; see note 1 to M to J Hooker, 12 July 1881 (in this edition as 81-07-12a).
These blueflowered s would have travelled quite safely in the Wards Case had the lid been occasionally lifted, had the moisture been kept properly adjusted through attention during the voyage as requested, and had the plants been lifted in the cool season.
