Geehrter Herr Baron!
Neulich hatte ich Gelegenheit, nicht weit von hier, in den Krichauff-Ranges, indem
wir nach einem Platze mit Futter u. Wasser suchten, eine ganze Plantage der sogenannten
Zamiae zu entdecken. Tausende u. Abertausende bedecken da die steilen Felswände. Ich
schicke Ihnen mit dieser Post davon eines der innern (Herzblätter), welche ganz gerade
herauskommen, nicht spiralig gewunden, u. dazu ein Blatt eines Sämlings, mit nur 4
Blättern. Auch brachten wir einen weiblichen Zapfen mit 15 Pfund wiegend. Dieselben
kommen gerade in der Mitte heraus, gewöhnlich zwei aus einem Stamm. Früchte habe ich
ja schon geschickt, u. ist deshalb nochmals zu schicken unnöthig. Auch fand ich eine
mir neue Pflanze, wahrscheinlich eine Stemodia, welche ich unter 432 hiermit schicke,
nebst noch einigen andern Pflanzen u. Samen von
Acazias
. Es lässt sich jetzt wenig thun, denn noch immer hält die Trockenheit an, ja es ist
so trocken, wie man es hier noch nie gesehen hat, so dass man ganze Strecken sehen
kann, wo die Sträucher abzusterben beginnen.
Hoffentlich haben Sie die mit letzter Post verschickten Circulare u. Liste erhalten.

Zur Berichtigung erwähne ich dass Rev. Schulze mein College ist u. mit mir an einem
u. demselben Platze wohnt u. mir schon manche Pflanze gebracht hat. Der Zapfen der
Zamia
, welchen wir mitbrachten, ist 15 Zoll lang u. 8 Zoll im Durchmesser.

Der Obige.
Mit dieser Post schickt L. Schulze wieder einige Insekten für Ihren frühern Gartengehülfen,
dessen Adresse uns abhanden gekommen ist. Hoffentlich sind Sie so freundlich demselben
die Büchse zu übermitteln, vorausgesetzt, dass Sie nicht Selbst wollen Gebrauch davon
machen, was zu Ihrer Verfügung steht.

Esteemed Baron!
Recently I had the opportunity to discover a whole plantation of the so-called zamias
not far from here in the Krichauff Ranges, whilst looking for a place with feed and
water. Thousands upon thousands covered the steep rocky walls there. I am sending
you by this post one of the inner (heart leaves), which come out completely straight,
not spirally wound, and in addition a leaf of a seedling with only four leaves. Also
we brought with us a female cone weighing 15 pounds. It comes out straight in the
middle, usually two from a trunk. I have already sent fruits and therefore it is not
necessary to send again. Also I found a new plant for me, probably a
Stemodia, which I send herewith under 432, together with some other plants and seeds of acacias.
There is little to do now, as the dryness still keeps on, indeed it is dry such as
has never been seen here, so that you can see whole stretches where the bushes begin
to die.
It is to be hoped you received the circular and list sent with the last mail.

For correction I mention that Reverend Schulze
is my colleague and lives with me at one and the same place and has already brought
me some plants. The cone of the
Zamia, which we brought with us, is 15 inches long and 8 inches in diameter.

Kempe presumably means to indicate that the postscript was written at the same place
and date as the main body of the letter.

With this mail L. Schulze is sending some insects for your former garden assistant,
whose address we lost.
It is to be hoped you will be so kind as to convey the box to him, provided that you
yourself do not wish to make use of what is available to you.

Charles French Snr had joined the staff of the Botanic Garden when M was Director, and was still
there at this time. He had a long-standing interest in insects.
