24 September 1881.
Permit me, esteemed Professor, to ask you, whether you have published further notes on since your notice on it in Trimen's journal?
1
Lindberg (1875). Lindberg noted in his paper that the new moss, which had been collected by Robert Johnston near the Picton River in Tasmania, had come to him from M. 'This moss', he declared, 'is of the highest importance' on account of its remarkable structure that he went on to describe.
I ask, because I want to provide a complete list of the Australian cryptogams as a supplement to the 11th volume of my Fragmenta.
2
Fragmenta phytographiae Australiae. See B81.13.12, which included (pp. 45-52) a section on mosses prepared by Eduard Hampe. was included (p. 109) in a list of additions to Hampe's list that M himself assembled.
I have not heard from you for a very long time, so you would probably have my more recent publications only very incompletely. I should like to send to your Soc. Fennica this and that, if I knew what you have and what would be welcome to the Society.
Have you remained firm in your resolution to publish a new generalogy

= an account of the genera? The existing work that M had in mind may have been Jaeger & Sauerbeck (1870-9). Lindberg never published a new listing.
of the mosses? Something of the kind is much needed, with the fluctuations in the generic characters in moss literature.
Respectfully wishing you all the best,
Ferd. von Mueller.
