Lassen Sie mich hoffen, lieber Herr Tepper, dass Ihre Versetzung in jeder Beziehung
zu Ihrem Glück beitragen wird. Jedenfalls kommen Sie in eine climatisch herrliche
Region, und in eine Pflanzenwelt, die von derjenigen der Yorke-Halbinsel sehr verschieden
ist, und Ihnen neue Gewächse in der Freien Natur bereiten wird.
Sie werden in Gebirge am Mt Lofty-Range noch manches Moos und und
auch noch mehr Pilze und Flechten finden können; denn wenn auch in den Jahren 1847-52
meine Lieblings Fusstouren zu den Wasserfällen und den Onkaparinga-Thälern waren,
so bin ich doch nicht oft und nie lange genug dagewesen, um eine erschöpfende Suchung
nach Acotyledenen zu halten. Im Interesse der Pflanzenkunde mache ich Sie auch darauf
aufmerksam, dass Sie in Ihren Ferien die Gegenden bei den Encounter-Bay, die mir bei
dem geringen damaligen Verkehr fast gar nicht zugänglich waren, einer genaueren Untersuchung
unterwerfen sollten, zumal da einige Tasmanische Pflanzen-Formen dort vereinzelt vorkommen,
wie
, und wo dieses Pflanzen Genus vorkommt, sollte sich auch noch manches andere Seltne
finden lassen.
Wahrscheinlich erstrecken sich auch die meisten derjenigen Pflanzen, die mir nur von
der bisher wenig erforschten Känguruh-Insel kommen auch bis nach Encounter Bay. Ist
Clarendon nahr Macclesfield oder näher der Küste? Ich hätte gern von dort Samen von
und von
.
variirt sehr; die schmalblättrige Form ist die normale; die breitblättrige, welche
bei Ihnen so häufig ist, wurde von R.Br. als Styphelia (Astroloma) denticulata unterschieden.
Dass die eine von Yorke's Halbinsel aufrecht wächst, ist mir unbekannt geblieben.
Jetzt ist das Exemplar verpackt. Das Sortiren u Inseriren ist ganz im Rückstand [wegen]
der Ausstellung.

Die Hecken Acacia (Kangaroo Thorn) = A. armata R Br. Schon 1848 wie ich den "Scrub"
zwischen Tilley's Swamp u dem Murray durchschritt nahm ich die
röthlich
blühende Banksia wahr; aber ich war durch einen Sturz so leidend, und meine Gefährten
ritten so schnell in langen Tagereisen, dass ich es versäumte, Exemplare dieser Banksia
zu erhaschen, denn wir hatten das Revier der Pflanzen passirt, ehe ich so dachte.
Ich wollte die Gegend immer wieder besuchen, was mir aber nicht beschieden blieb.
Manchmal habe ich nachher gedacht, es möchte eine Varietät von B. ornata gewesen sein.
Indessen liess ich den Sache nicht ruhen, und habe erfolglos mehrere Briefe desshalb
geschrieben in früheren Jahren.
Jedenfalls sollt sich die Banksia von nahe Tilly's Swamp durch Correspondenz erlangen
lassen.
Jetzt
giebt es ja
Wege
, ja sogar Post Wagen u Eisenbahnen, also ist diese
wenig
oder gar nicht erforschte Gegend, wo ich auch
fand, Ihnen u Hr Prof Tate ja zugänglicher. Vielleicht machen Sie in den Festtagen
eine Ausflug dahin.
Wir brauchen auch volle Sammlungen von Streaky Bay für die Vervollständigung der Flora.
Würde Ihr College dort nicht zum Sammeln zu bewegen sein

Let me hope, dear Mr Tepper, that your transfer will contribute in every respect to
your happiness. At any rate you are coming into a climatically magnificent region
and into a world of plants that is very different from that of the Yorke Peninsula,
and will give you new plants in the countryside.
You will be able to find in the hills of the Mount Lofty ranges still many a moss
and also even more fungi and lichens; since although in the years 1847-52 my favourite
journeys on foot were to the waterfalls and the Onkaparinga valleys, I was really
not there often and never long enough to undertake an exhaustive search for acotyledons.
In the interest of plant studies I'll also make you aware that in your holidays you
should subject the regions near Encounter Bay, that were almost not at all accessible
to me with the poor transport at that time, to a more detailed investigation, especially
since some Tasmanian plant forms occur there isolated, such as
, and where this plant genus occurs, even more rare things should also be found.
Probably even the majority of those plants that come to me only from the previously
little researched Kangaroo Island also extend to Encounter Bay. Is Clarendon near
Macclesfield or nearer the coast?
I should like to have seeds of
and
from there.
varies very much; the narrow-leafed form is the norm; the wide-leafed, which is so
common at your place, was distinguished by Robert Brown as Styphelia (Astroloma) denticulata.
That the one from Yorke Peninsula grows upright had remained unknown to me. Now the
specimen is packed. The sorting and insertion are quite in arrears [on account of]
the Exhibition.
Have you another to give away?
The hedge Acacia (Kangaroo Thorn) = A. armata RBr. As early as 1848 as I traversed the "scrub" between Tilleys Swamp
and the Murray, I observed the
red
-flowering Banksia, but I was so ailing from a fall and my companions rode so quickly in long daily
journeys that I neglected to obtain a specimen of this Banksia, because we had passed the area of this plant before I thought to do so. I always
intended to visit the region again but that was not granted to me. Sometimes I have
thought afterwards it might have been a variety of B. ornata. Meanwhile I have not let the matter rest and have written several letters on that
account in former years without success.
At any rate the Banksia from near Tilleys Swamp should be attainable through correspondence.
Now
there is certainly a
track
, indeed even a mail cart and railway, therefore this
little
or not at all researched region, where I also found
, is certainly more accessible to you and Professor Tate. Perhaps you will make an
excursion there in the holidays.
We also need complete collections from Streaky Bay for the completion of the flora.
Would your colleague there not be induced to collecting.
