It was very thoughtful of you, dear Mr Lloyd, to send me the beautifully dried plants,
which also were very welcome, as they represent a new region in my Museum-collection,
in which plants from Ohio were hitherto but scantily contained.
In return I send you this time (also by post) 90 species of ferns (none cultivated,
all field-specimens) and 15 species of the intricate genus Eucalyptus. The next sending
will consist of miscellaneous Australian plants, and I see no difficulty to forward
always at once in exchange a parcel for you, as fortunately it can be done by post,
the frank stamp of my Department carrying my parcels free to the United States under your reciprocity treaty with this colony. I send a couple of copies of my Linnean
Index,
to bring the original edition into use again; this and some other publications can
be sent to any of the North American scientific unions, who may wish to possess my
works.

With regardful remembrance
Ferd von Mueller,
M. D.
Among other works I can send my English translation of Wittstein's chemistry of plants,
which book was brought out on my private expense. the library of all medical Societies
ought to have this handy, reliable and unique work, and I would be happy to send it
gratis, if I learnt that the gift would be appreciated.
