To the Undersecretary
Sir
In reply to your telegraphic request
I have the honor to inform you, that my estimate for public works was — as usual in
former years — transmitted along with my other estimate, and a separate copy forwarded
to the public-works Department.

Telegram not found. This may have been the same telegram that that resulted in the general estimates submission,
M to T. Wilson, 11 July 1881 (in this edition as 81-07-11a).
The votes of my establishment are so limited, that I have not been able to save any
portion of the means at my disposal, indeed I have supplemented the expenditure for
scientific purposes out of my salary to a large extent throughout the year. As I have
no public grounds under my control, I can raise no revenue, but I may fairly claim that my departmental researches and my official
correspondence are always calculated to increase the vegetable resources of the country
and therewith indirectly also the revenue.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Gov. Botanist.

The Estimates that follow are written on a separate sheet, and are probably a copy made by someone in the Chief Secretary's Office.
