Letter not found. The text given here is from Brockmüller (1883), p. 46. The article was stimulated by the gift of a large Todea to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg that was placed in a conservatory at the gardens in Schwerin: see M to the Gardeners' chronicle, June 1881 (in this edition as 81-06-00). The letter is dated to June 1881 on the assumption that M wrote to Brockmüller when the specimen was sent, although it could have been in response to a letter from Brockmüller when he was preparing the article.
[Baron v. Mueller schreibt mir, dass er vor Jahren ein etwas kleineres Exemplar der an den Königl. Garten in Kew sandte, welches im Bot. Mag. abgebildet worden sei. Sir Joseph Hooker habe ihm damals über die Pflanze geschrieben: "it is something to dream about! it is the most remarkable and precious access to our Conservatory collections since years." Ein drittes Exemplar von etwa gleichkommenden Dimensionen kam durch Hooker und Booth als Geschenk nach Berlin.]

J. Hooker (1865-1904), vol. 98, tab 5954, published March 1872.
At that time, Sir Joseph Hooker had written to him about the plant: "It is something to dream about! It is the most remarkable and precious access to our Conservatory collections since years."

See J. Hooker to M, 10 September 1869; the quotation is not verbatim.
A third specimen of approximately equal dimensions came to Berlin as a gift through Hooker and Booth.

A large Todea sent by M to Hooker in February 1871 (see M to J. Hooker, 9 February 1872 (in this edition as 71-02-09b)) was sent onwards to John Booth's nursery at Flottbeck, near Hamburg. It was destined for a large winter-garden that Booth was building in Berlin; see Booth to Hooker, 26 June 1871 (in this edition as M71-06-26).
