Sie werden es sonderbar gefunden haben, bester Freund, dass ich Ihnen nicht in den letzten Tagen Ihres Hierseins wieder besuchend nahe kam, aber es erklärt sich aus einer heftigen Erkältung, die mir sogar für einige Zeit die Stimme nahm, und aus der Nothwendigkeit gleich nachher für die Regierung nach der Yan Yean Werken zu gehen, um über die Ursachen des schlechten Wassers zu rapportiren, welches in der Entwicklung von Spirillum volutans, so weit ich es bisher ermittelt habe, erklärt wird, u diese Alga entsteht wahrscheinlich durch die Unreinigkeiten, welche durch Dung &c von dem Farmlande am Flusse selbst in das Yan Yean Wasser hineingeschwemmt werden.
Unter diesen Umständen werden Sie meine Unaufmerksamkeit verzeihen. Ich hätte gern Sie noch einmal gesehen, zumal da es vielleicht das letzte mal im Leben sein wird, dass wir uns treffen.
Lassen Sie mich hoffen dass in Christchurch doch noch eine neue Ausgabe der "select plants" erscheinen wird. Zum Nachschlagen u auch zum Studium in der Landwirthschaft u Technik u für Culturen der Gärten u allgemeine Belehrung sollte das Buch doch wichtig sein, u auch sich reichlich dort verkauffen lassen. Ich würde mich um so mehr darüber freuen, wenn es durch ihre Vermittlung doch noch in N. Seeland erschiene, da Dr Hector u Sir George Grey zuletzt sich dem Erscheinen einer neuen Auflage in Ihren Colonien widersetzten.

Haast was a passenger on Tararua which cleared out of Melbourne on 23 March 1881 (Argus, 23 March 1881, p. 4). He had arrived per Ringarooma on 18 February (Argus, 25 February 1881, p. 4) to seek medical attention (see M to J. von Haast, 17 April 1881 (in this edition as 81-04-17a)).
but it is explained by a bad cold that even took my voice away for some time and from the necessity immediately afterwards of going to the Yan Yean works for the government to report on the causes of the bad water which, as far as I have ascertained so far, is explained in the development of
Spirillium volutans

Search for Spirillium volutans in

and this alga originates probably through the impurities that are washing into the Yan Yean water through dung &c from the farmland on the river itself.
Under these circumstances you will excuse my inattention. I would like to have seen you again, especially since it would possibly be the last time in life that we could meet.
Let me hope that yet another new edition of the Select plants will be published in Christchurch. For reference and also for study in agriculture and technology and for garden culture and general instruction, the book should certainly be important, and also will sell well over there. I should be pleased so much the more if it was yet published in New Zealand through your mediation, because Dr Hector and Sir George Grey at first opposed the publication of a new edition in your colony.
