Illmo Signore,

ed abeti interlined before (Tannen), here and below.

Most illustrious Sir,
I have the honour of transmitting the seeds of three species of pine and fir (Tannen

) of the Himalayas, thinking it might be convenient to try cultivation around the "Tre Fontana"

Cistercian abbey in the Pontine Marshes near Rome, famously unhealthy due to malaria.
and I think it will be possible for me to obtain other conifer seeds from the mountains of India, for plantations in the unhealthy marshes near Rome.
I have also turned to my scientist friends in North America to obtain from there the seeds of indigenous pines (Tannen), since even those gigantic trees could be bred for hygienic purposes in proximity to the pontine marshes, since the exhalations of all the pines and firs (Tannen) destroy the miasmatic matter.
As soon as the seeds in the United States are collected, my agents Messrs Watson and Skull, in London, will promptly send them directly to the Department of His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Rome, where, I hope, this shipment for experimental cultivation will be appreciated.
Respectfully yours
Ferd. von Mueller
