The text given here is from the report of the meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society Scientific Committee held on 11 May 1880 (Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society of London, n.s, vol. 6 [1880], p. lxxii). It is dated to March as the latest likely date that it could have been written to have been discussed at that meeting.
[Gall on Eucalyptus:— Dr. Masters showed a remarkable fusiform gall on a species of Eucalyptus, and which had been sent to him by Baron von Mueller. It was referred to Mr. MacLachlan for report.

At the meeting of the committee on 25 May,
Mr. MacLachlan reported that the spindle-shaped gall sent by Baron Von Mueller, was probably the work of a cynips, which had perforated the young flower-buds. Some of the galls contained a larva of a dipterous insect, itself attacked by a parasitic hymenopterous insect.
