i.e. Leichhardt. A subsequently discredited report by J. Skuthorpe claiming to have
found traces of Leichhardt had prompted M to press for a new search for the missing
explorer to be undertaken; see M to the Editor of the
Age, 20 February 1880 (in this edition as 80-02-20a). Bringing a committee together would have been the first step in organizing a search;
there is, however, no evidence that such a meeting took place or, if it did, that
it led to any action.
