My dear Baron,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 13th instant and to assure you that I will do all in my power to aid you in your endeavour to discover the person supposed to be a member of Leichard's

i.e. Leichhardt's.

party: — I may remark, however, that Hum e's statements are utterly unreliable, a nd we have proof to this effect

M had come to believe that Jack-Dick Skuthorpe had validated some of the claims made by the discredited Andrew Hume; see M to the Editor of the Age, 20 February 1880 (in this edition as 80-02-20a) (B80.02.05). So far as poor Leichard's remains or records are concerned I fear any amount of enquiry and expense will be fruitless as a satisfactory result.
