Letter not found. The text given here is from ‘ cultivation’, Daily evening bulletin (San Francisco), 24 January 1880. December 1879 is the latest date on which M could have written, in order for his letter to reach California by late January 1880.
On the basis of the context, the correspondent is identified as Hilgard, but see M to G. Englemann, 4 December 1880 (in this edition as 80-12-04a), which might suggest that M's correspondence with Hilgard had not begun at this time.
The text of this note is reprinted in 'American Agriculture', Leader (Melbourne), 3 April 1880, p. 7.
[It is a well known fact that the cinchona has been recommended to our tree-planters as a valuable and easily grown tree. Professor Hilgard of the State University has repeatedly urged it upon our horticulturists. Letters received from Baron Von Mueller of Melbourne, and Professor Hill of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, have stated that in their opinion California is well adapted to the cultivation of cinchona.]
