It will be best, dear Mr Shillinglaw, that you should see yourself the clever letter
of the Signora Negri,
in reference to Flinders's detention,
and also your election into the Ital Society.

Shillinglaw was writing a biography of Matthew Flinders who, while returning to England
after circumnavigating Australia, was detained by the local French authorities at
Mauritius for several years after putting in there in December 1803 for urgent repairs
to his ship. The biography was never published.
