I had a letter from the
Commandeur Negri
, by last mail,
dear Mr Shillinglaw, in which the sending of the autogram of Flinders is most gratefully
acknowledged.
The Italian Savant wishes me also to impress on you, that the first Emperor Napoléon
could not have been made well and fully acquainted with all the circumstances, which
were connected with poor Flinders retention in captivity, otherwise — so thinks Negri,
— the Emperor would have caused his release.

Matthew Flinders was detained by the French authorities at Mauritius for more than
six years when, with his ship sinking beneath him, he called there in December 1803
seeking assistance.
With kind regards
Ferd. von Mueller.
