International Exhibition, Melbourne, 1880-1. James Thompson, Secretary of Committees
for the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880 had written to the Chief Secretary
on 17 September 1879 (Q79/8571, unit 1102, VPRS 3991/P inward registered correspondence, VA 860 Chief Secretary's
Department, Public Record Office, Victoria) pointing out that
As there are many subjects of special interest to your Department likely to be brought
forward, the Committee will be glad to receive the names of any three of your gentlemen
you may please to appoint, in order that they may be included in the list of delegates
upon whom the details of the Congress will devolve.
A circular was enclosed which stated that the Congress would be
based on the same principle as that which is annually held under the auspices of the
National Association for the Promotion of Social Science, and resembling, in point
of detail, the successful series held during the recent [1878] Paris Exhibition.'
Copies of the circular were forwarded to M, the Secretary of the Central Board of
Health and the Government Astronomer.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
W. H. Odgers
