The text appears in the proceedings for the meeting of 20 November 1879, and is introduced by ‘Letters were read from Lieut.-General Sir Arthur Phayre and Sir Ferdinand Baron von Mueller in acknowledgement of their election as Honorary Members. The Baron writes:—‘. The item is dated to October 1879 as the latest likely date that the letter could have been sent, to be noticed at this meeting.

all the more, as I have comparatively done so little to advance the special interests of your important union; but I can assure you that I have watched with pleasure and with advantage to myself the strides made by your Society in enhancing the cultural resources of India and in diffusing a taste for refined Horticultural pursuits also in the great Indian Empire.
