Die heutige Post, edler Freund, brachte mir den wichtigen Band Ihrer geologischen Forschungen, welchen Ihre zueigende Inschrift für mich um so werthvoller macht. Welch ein Schatz von Original Beobachtungen! Wer selbst Autor ist, weiss was 500 Seiten Druck meint. Das Werk macht Ihnen grosse Ehre. Wenn ich die Pflanzen bemerkt finde, werde ich immer wehmüthig gestimmt, dass ich nicht vor 20 Jahren mit Ihnen die dortigen Süd Alpen durchwanderte, wozu Sie mich so grossmüthig einluden. Aber ich mochte nicht in Sir Joseph Hooker's territorium eindringen. Nun Ligusticum Haastii u ein paar andere Pflanzen sind mir doch geblieben.
Welch ein prächtiges Gebäude, Ihr Museum! Sie müssen es verzeihen, wenn ich Sie darum beneide! Aber mir wird hier durch Neid u Nepotismus Alles verenthalten, so dass mir nur noch immer das einzige Zimmer meiner trocknen Pflanzen geblieben. Welchen Glanz hätte ich mit halb den Mitteln auf das Land werfen können, die nun sinnlos in meiner früheren Anstalt vergeudet werden. So ist mein Leben vereinsamt geblieben u ich bin ganz mittelloss in Privat Eigenthum.
Wie die Zeit dahin fliegt! Ihre Kinder sind wohl fast schon erwachsen. Gedenken Sie meiner doch brieflich auch dann u wann; es wird mich erfreuen u an bessere Zeiten der Vergangenheit erinnern.
Empfehlen Sie mich dem Wohlwollen Ihrer Frau Gemahlin u behalten Sie lieb

Today's mail, noble friend, brought me the important volume of your geological researches, which your dedicatory inscription makes all the more valuable for me.

What a store of original observations! Whoever is an author himself knows what 500 printed pages means. The work does you great honour. When I find the plants mentioned, I shall always become sad that I did not wander through the southern alps there with you 20 years ago, as you so generously invited me. But I may not enter into Sir Joseph Hooker's territory. Now

Hooker attributed L. haastii to M in J. Hooker (1864-7), p. 95. Among others so attributed is Veronica hulkeana, p. 213, of which there are specimens at Kew with the name attributed to M. There is also a specimen with M's Botanical Museum of Melbourne label at Göttingen (GOET 9573) with the name V. Hulkei, the name used on MEL 1594290 for a specimen taken from the garden, 30 January 1862. M did not acknowledge this name in B64.10.02, where he united species under the name V. forsteri.
What a magnificent building, your museum! You must excuse it if I envy you for it! But everything here is withheld from me through envy and nepotism, so that only the single room of my dried plants still remains to me. What glory would I have been able to throw on the country with half the means that now is senselessly squandered in my former institution. So my life has remained isolated and I am quite without means in private property.
How time flies! Your children are probably almost grown up already. Do also remember me in a letter now and then; it will please me and remind me of better times in the past.
